Dresden Cathedral is the Roman Catholic court church of Dresden, located on the Schlossplatz in the Innere Altstadt. Construction took place in the mid 18th century under the architect Gaetano Chiaveri for Elector Augustus III, and it is a major Baroque landmark in the city.
The exterior presents Baroque façades and a prominent tower while the interior contains an ornate nave, a large pipe organ and funerary monuments. The cathedral is closely sited to other central attractions, so it is commonly visited as part of a short walking circuit through Dresden’s historic core.
The church was built for the Saxon court in the 18th century, completed in the 1740s to 1750s under Gaetano Chiaveri. It was severely damaged in the February 1945 Allied bombing of Dresden and subsequently reconstructed during the postwar decades.
The cathedral stands on the Schlossplatz in Dresden’s Innere Altstadt, immediately adjacent to the Elbe riverfront and near Dresden Castle and the Semperoper. It is in the city centre of Dresden in the state of Saxony.
- Best viewing point: Seen most clearly from the Schlossplatz and the terraces along the Elbe; the cathedral sits directly across from the Semperoper and Dresden Castle.
- Period and restoration: Built in the mid 18th century by an Italian architect for the Saxon court and heavily damaged in the 1945 bombing, the building was restored in the postwar decades.
