Dresden Castle

Dresden Castle (Residenzschloss) is the historic residence of Saxon rulers in Dresden, Germany, with origins in the medieval period and major Renaissance and Baroque rebuilding phases. It now houses several state museums and important art collections belonging to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

The complex contains major museum displays including princely treasures, arms and armour, and graphic collections. Visitors routinely see the historic Green Vault, baroque state rooms and museum galleries that present decorative arts, coins and prints across several curated spaces.

Built and expanded by Saxon electors and kings over centuries, the castle served as the political and cultural center of Saxony. It suffered extensive destruction in the Allied bombing of Dresden in February 1945 and has been the subject of phased reconstruction and restoration since the late 1940s and especially after German reunification.

The castle stands in Dresden’s inner Altstadt on the north bank of the Elbe River, close to the Zwinger palace and the Semperoper opera house. It is centrally located and easily reached on foot from major tram and pedestrian routes.

• Rüstkammer (Armory): The palace armory and historical weapons collection, displaying suits of armour and ceremonial arms assembled by Saxon electors and kings.
• Kupferstich-Kabinett (Print Room): Houses extensive print and drawing collections as part of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, including graphic works and old master prints conserved and shown in rotating displays.
