Dovrefjell

Dovrefjell is a mountain range in central Norway notable for its high plateaus, alpine peaks and arctic-alpine ecosystems. The area includes famous summits such as Snøhetta and protected landscapes important for large mammals and mountain flora.

Hiking routes and established trails cross the plateaus and lead to summits, offering opportunities to observe wild reindeer and, in some areas, musk oxen. The landscape is used for outdoor recreation and scientific study of montane and tundra habitats.

The mountains are ancient and have been shaped by glaciation and erosion; they have served historically as a transit corridor between regions and as seasonal grazing ground. Modern conservation measures include national park protections and visitor management to conserve sensitive habitats.

Dovrefjell sits along the main north-south transport corridor between Oslo and Trondheim and is accessed from mountain villages such as Dombås and Hjerkinn in central Norway.
