Dos Pilas is a Classic Maya archaeological site in the Petén Department of northern Guatemala that rose to prominence in the 7th and 8th centuries AD. It contains palace groups, temples, stelae and hieroglyphic texts that record its dynastic history.

Visitors explore a compact acropolis and main plaza, carved stelae and the hieroglyphic stairway that preserve historical records of the city’s rulers. The site also features palace complexes, defensive earthworks and a ballcourt, providing a clear view of Classic Maya urban and ceremonial planning.

Established in the early 7th century by a royal founder associated with Tikal, Dos Pilas later allied with and opposed neighbouring powers as local politics shifted; it flourished through the 7th and into the 8th centuries before being abandoned in the late Classic period. Archaeological excavations have revealed extensive epigraphic and architectural remains.

Set within lowland rainforest in the southern Petén region of Guatemala, Dos Pilas lies amid seasonal streams and limestone terrain and is reached by tracks from regional roads and other Maya sites.

  • Founding and period of prominence: Founded in the Classic Maya period around the early 7th century AD by a royal scion linked to Tikal, the city became a powerful regional capital during the 7th and 8th centuries.
  • Epigraphic significance: Extensive hieroglyphic inscriptions at the site document dynastic events and conflicts with neighbouring Maya states, making Dos Pilas important for Classic Maya history and epigraphy.
