Dongting Lake is a large, seasonally variable freshwater lake in northeastern Hunan province, southern China, known for its role in regional hydrology and cultural history. It is one of China’s major inland lakes and acts as a flood basin for several rivers.
The lake receives water from several major Hunan rivers and expands in the rainy season, altering shoreline and island extents. Important local sights include Junshan Island, associated with a distinctive local tea, and the Yueyang Tower on the northern shore, a historic literary landmark.

Local roads and pier access are commonly used for boat tours and lakeside access.
Tips for Visiting Dongting Lake #
- Base yourself in Yueyang or nearby towns and take a guided boat trip to the East Dongting Lake wetland reserve - winter (roughly November-February) is the best time for large concentrations of migratory waterbirds.
- Combine a shore visit to Yueyang Tower or Junshan Island with a wetland excursion: the historic town access points make arranging boat transfers straightforward and are better for services than trying to reach isolated shoreline landings.
