How to Get to Dongtai Town#
Dongtai (东台) is best reached via Yancheng Nanyang Airport (YNZ) or by rail to Dongtai Railway Station (东台站). For international arrivals you can also use larger airports (Nanjing, Lianyungang, Shanghai) then continue by train or coach to Dongtai.
Yancheng Nanyang Airport (YNZ): The nearest airport serving Dongtai is Yancheng Nanyang Airport (YNZ). From YNZ you can take a taxi to Dongtai city centre (approx. 60-90 minutes, about 120-200 CNY depending on traffic), or take the airport shuttle/coach into Yancheng city then a local intercity bus or taxi to Dongtai (shuttle 20-35 CNY to Yancheng; onward bus/taxi additional 20-60 CNY).
Lianyungang Baitabu (LYG), Nanjing Lukou (NKG) or Shanghai Pudong (PVG): These airports are farther away but used by many travellers. From LYG expect a taxi or coach to Dongtai of around 1-2 hours (taxi ~150-250 CNY; coach connections vary). From Nanjing Lukou or Shanghai Pudong you generally travel by high-speed train or long-distance coach into Yancheng or nearby hubs, then a bus/taxi to Dongtai - total door-to-door times typically 3-4.5 hours; combined costs vary but plan on 150-400 CNY depending on route and class.
Train: Dongtai is served by Dongtai Railway Station (东台站). Regional and some intercity trains connect Dongtai with Yancheng and other Jiangsu cities; travel times are short from nearby hubs (Yancheng ~40-70 minutes). From larger nodes: Shanghai or Nanjing normally involve a transfer at Yancheng or other regional stations - expect 1.5-3 hours and fares typically in the range of ~50-150 CNY depending on train type and distance.
Bus: Regular intercity coaches run to Dongtai from Yancheng long-distance bus stations and from other nearby cities in Jiangsu. Typical coach fares from Yancheng are about 20-40 CNY with journeys around 1-1.5 hours. Within Dongtai there is a local bus network with very low fares (usually 1-3 CNY per ride) for getting around town and neighbouring townships.
How to Get Around Dongtai Town#
Dongtai is best navigated by a mix of local buses and taxis: buses are the cheapest for longer in-county journeys, while taxis (or Didi) are fast and convenient for door-to-door trips. For regional connections, use the railway station or intercity coaches; short trips inside town are easily done by bicycle or on foot.
- Local buses (1-3 CNY) - Dongtai’s urban and suburban bus network covers the main neighbourhoods and nearby towns. Fares are very cheap (typically 1-3 CNY) and buses are the most economical way to move longer distances inside the county. Services can be infrequent in the evening, so check timetables or ask locals for the last departures.
- Taxis / Didi (10-80 CNY) - Metered taxis and app-based Didi operate in Dongtai; the flag fall is around 8-10 CNY and typical short trips across town cost 10-30 CNY. Taxis are the fastest way to reach outlying suburbs or to travel with luggage - expect higher fares for late-night or long county routes.
- Intercity coaches (20-60 CNY) - Coaches link Dongtai with Yancheng, Lianyungang and other Jiangsu cities from the county’s long-distance bus stations. Tickets are inexpensive (roughly 20-60 CNY depending on distance) and departures are frequent to nearby hubs; they are a reliable option when there are no direct trains.
- Regional rail (50-150 CNY) - Trains calling at Dongtai Railway Station connect the city with Yancheng and regional centres. Trains are useful for medium-distance travel across Jiangsu - book ahead for peak holiday periods. Expect second-class fares in the tens to low hundreds of CNY depending on route and speed.
- Bicycle / e-bike (0.5-2 CNY) - Short trips around the centre are easy by bicycle or shared e-bike (Meituan/HelloBike-style services), which are cheap and convenient for local errands. Watch for busy junctions and keep to cycle lanes where available; costs are generally around 0.5-2 CNY per 15-30 minutes.
- Walking - The downtown of Dongtai is compact and walkable; strolling is often the fastest way to explore markets and the central streets. Use walking for short errands and to reach bus or taxi stops - comfortable shoes are recommended for uneven pavements in older neighbourhoods.
