Dongsha Atoll National Park

Dongsha Atoll National Park protects Pratas Atoll, a coral atoll in the northern South China Sea administered by Taiwan and designated a national park in 2007.

The park preserves the atoll’s emergent islet, lagoon, fringing reefs and adjacent waters, and is notable for its coral communities, seagrass beds, seabirds and sea turtle nesting sites. Access is limited and managed for conservation and research purposes.

The atoll lies in the northern South China Sea; it is several hundred kilometres southwest of Taiwan’s main island and is managed from Taiwan with periodic supply and research visits.

• Protection and access: Established as a national park in 2007 to protect the Pratas Atoll ecosystem, the area is managed with restricted access and scientific permits are usually required for visits.
• Conservation value: The atoll is an important coral-reef and seabird habitat and supports nesting sea turtles and diverse reef fish populations, making it a priority site for marine research in the region.

• Pratas Island (Dongsha Island): The main emergent feature is Pratas Island (Dongsha Island), a small coral islet that hosts the park's station and administrative facilities.
• Lagoon and reefs: The atoll's central lagoon and surrounding fringing reefs form the marine core of the park, supporting coral, seagrass and reef fish communities.
• Wildlife areas: Extensive seabird roosts and sea turtle nesting areas occur on and around the atoll and are part of the park's protected habitats.
