Dongdaemun

Dongdaemun is an east-central district of Seoul centered on the historic city gate Heunginjimun (commonly called Dongdaemun) and a major commercial and cultural area. It combines a preserved Joseon-era gate with extensive retail, wholesale and cultural facilities.

The neighborhood features a large market district of multi-storey shopping complexes, fabric and clothing wholesalers, and street-level stalls that remain active late into the night. Nearby contemporary attractions include the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), a major venue for exhibitions, design shows and public events.

The gate at the heart of the district dates to the Joseon era and formed part of Seoul’s historic city wall; the surrounding area has evolved over centuries into a commercial hub. In the late 19th and 20th centuries the market district expanded; the DDP was built on the former stadium site and opened in 2014 as a modern cultural landmark.

Dongdaemun sits in central Seoul, near the Cheonggyecheon stream and Seoul’s old city center; it is well served by subway lines and lies within walking distance of other central districts.

• Heunginjimun (Dongdaemun Gate): The 14th-century city gate Heunginjimun, commonly called the East Gate, which forms the historical focal point of the Dongdaemun area and survives as a restored stone-and-wood city gate.
• Dongdaemun Market: Dongdaemun Market - a large wholesale and retail district comprising multi-storey shopping malls and market streets that operate late into the night and early morning.
• Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP): Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) - a modern cultural and exhibition complex on the site of the former Dongdaemun Stadium, opened in 2014 and known for contemporary design and events.
