Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex
Nature Reserve Large Thai forest complex protecting endangered Asian wildlife
The Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex links several Thai national parks, including Khao Yai, and protects extensive evergreen and deciduous forest, waterfalls and wildlife corridors. Visitors come for hiking, wildlife watching (elephants, gibbons) and waterfall trails.
The Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex is a UNESCO World Heritage forest landscape in central-eastern Thailand made up of multiple national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. It is significant for extensive tracts of tropical evergreen forest and the large mammals and biodiversity it supports.
Trails, waterfalls, viewpoint drives and a developed visitor infrastructure are concentrated in Khao Yai National Park, which is popular for hiking, birdwatching and seasonal wildlife sightings. The adjoining parks - including Thap Lan, Pang Sida, and Ta Phraya - form larger, more remote forest blocks where conservation work focuses on habitat integrity and populations of elephants, tigers and other large species.
Protected area status for component parks was established in the mid to late 20th century as part of Thailand’s national park system; the forest complex was recognised internationally for its intact forest ecosystems and species diversity. Ongoing conservation addresses pressures from encroachment, roads and fragmenting land use.
The forest complex stretches across several provinces in central-eastern Thailand, extending from areas north and east of Bangkok into more remote borderlands; Khao Yai is the most accessible section and lies roughly a two- to three-hour drive from Bangkok.
- Conservation importance: The complex comprises several contiguous and adjacent protected areas that together form the largest remaining contiguous forest block in central Thailand and support large mammals and a high diversity of forest birds.
- Visitor access: Khao Yai is reachable by road from Bangkok in about 2 to 3 hours and contains visitor facilities, trails and seasonal wildlife-viewing opportunities, while the more remote parks require longer travel and guided access.
What to See #
- Khao Yai National Park: Khao Yai National Park - the most visited component, featuring waterfalls, grasslands, forest trails and viewpoints within a montane rainforest landscape.
- Other parks in the complex: Thap Lan, Pang Sida and Ta Phraya National Parks - larger contiguous forest blocks that provide core habitat for wide-ranging species such as Asian elephants and tigers.

Tips for Visiting Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex #
- Aim for dawn (and the hour after) in the Khao Yai/Pak Chong sectors to maximise wildlife and birdwatching activity when animals are most active and roads are quieter.
- Enter through the main Khao Yai/Pak Chong park gates or official visitor centres to pick up maps, recent trail/road closures and ranger advice rather than driving straight to the popular waterfall car parks.
- Don't skip the lesser‑visited protected areas within the World Heritage complex (for example sectors outside the main tourist loop) - they tend to offer better birding and fewer vehicles.
- Avoid weekend and midday peaks by visiting on weekdays and planning your drive routes to reach key viewpoints early morning or late afternoon rather than at mid‑day when the most visitors concentrate at falls and picnic spots.
