Coastal Plain & Djibouti City

A marked cooling arrives by October as daytime temperatures drop and humidity eases; mornings are especially pleasant for exploring the Corniche and the city’s markets. Diving conditions improve for many local operators, and the return of more comfortable temperatures opens up day trips to nearby beaches and the small islands. Pack a light layer for evenings, which are noticeably fresher than in summer.

Gulf of Tadjoura & Islands (Moucha, Maskali)

November sees mild, comfortable days and calmer seas, making it one of the best months for island hopping and extended snorkel trips. Water clarity is typically good and marine life is active, so multi-dive itineraries are practical; book dive operators in advance for popular sites. Nights are slightly cooler, so a lightweight jacket or wrap is useful while dining outdoors.

Goda Massif & Tadjourah Highlands (Day Forest)

November sees mild days and cool nights across the massif, with a slightly increased chance of short rains compared with the dry season - helpful for grasses and springs. Trails are in good condition from the cooler weather, so multi-day treks and visits to the Day Forest reserve are very doable; insect activity remains low. A fleece for night camps and sturdy rainproof shell for brief showers are sensible.

Lake Assal & Central Salt Lowlands

November is often pleasant for visiting Lake Assal with warm days and cooler nights; the risk of uncomfortable, prolonged heat is much lower. This is a sensible month to combine an Assal visit with other interior excursions such as Dikhil and the Arta region; local guides resume regular tours. Pack layers for early starts and modest shelter for shifting winds on the plain.

Southern Interior & Ali Sabieh (Dikhil, Ali Sabieh, Arta)

November continues the cooling trend and is one of the best times to traverse the southern interior, with reliable sunshine and tolerable daytime heat. Local festivals and market days are easier to attend as conditions are now comfortable; bring a light jacket for night stops which can be crisp. Water remains important but is less of a logistical headache than in summer months.
