Djerba is a low-lying island in the Gulf of Gabès off Tunisia’s southeast coast, known for its beaches, traditional villages and mixed cultural heritage. It has been inhabited since antiquity and remains an important local tourist and cultural centre.
On the island visitors find beaches, fishing ports and towns such as Houmt Souk, historic religious sites including the El Ghriba Synagogue, and villages noted for crafts and pottery. The island’s landscape includes olive groves, palm stands and a fringe of coastal dunes and lagoons.
Historically Djerba has been a crossroads in the central Mediterranean with Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Ottoman influences evident in local architecture and traditions. The island developed as a maritime and trading hub and retains vernacular architecture and community structures shaped by that history.
Djerba lies off Tunisia’s southern Mediterranean coast in the Médenine Governorate; it is connected to the mainland by ferry services and a short causeway and is reached by road from the coastal towns of the Gulf of Gabès.
- Tourism: The island is a popular seaside destination with long sandy beaches, shallow lagoons and a well-developed tourist sector centred on Houmt Souk and mid-sized resorts.
What to See #
- Houmt Souk: Houmt Souk is the island's principal town and market centre, known for narrow streets, traditional souks and coastal access.
- El Ghriba Synagogue: El Ghriba Synagogue on the island is one of the oldest continuously used synagogues in North Africa and an important pilgrimage site for North African Jews.
- Guellala and craft villages: Traditional pottery and village centres such as Guellala where local crafts and pottery traditions are concentrated.
How to Get to Djerba #
Djerba is an island reached by air to Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE), which serves regular domestic flights from Tunis and seasonal international services. The island is also linked to the mainland by a paved causeway (the Ras Ajdir/road connection), so it is reachable by car or intercity bus from the mainland; on the island most destinations (Houmt Souk, Erriadh) are then reached by local taxi, louage (shared minibus) or rented car.
Tips for Visiting Djerba #
- Plan shore or village visits for early morning or late afternoon to enjoy cooler temperatures and softer light on beaches and in Houmt Souk; mid‑day can be very hot in summer.
- Use Houmt Souk as your base for markets, crafts and ferries to small fishing villages; many organised tours drop visitors at the main souk, but exploring its side streets reveals local workshops.
- What many visitors miss: the island's traditional pottery villages (e.g., Guellala) and the El Ghriba synagogue in Erriadh - both are culturally distinctive and worth allocating time for.
- To avoid the busiest tourist stretches, head to quieter eastern or southern beaches or inland villages rather than the main hotel beaches around the central towns during peak season.
