The building features a large prayer hall, an inner courtyard and a prominent minaret typical of Ottoman mosque design. Visitors come to view the mosque’s stone and tiled details and to include it on walking routes through the Casbah and toward the seafront.
Construction took place under Ottoman authorities in the 17th century and the mosque has served continuously as a place of Islamic worship since that time. The complex has undergone repairs and maintenance over the centuries but retains its basic Ottoman-era layout and functions.
The mosque sits in central Algiers inside the Casbah, the historic medina above the Bay of Algiers, within walking distance of the city’s waterfront and other Casbah landmarks.
- Location within the Casbah: Located within Algiers' historic Casbah, so visits are commonly combined with walks through the old medina.
- Visitor etiquette: Active mosque - observe local customs and modest dress when entering the courtyard or prayer hall.
