Djamaa el Djazaïr, often called the Grand Mosque of Algiers, is a modern monumental mosque complex on the waterfront of Algiers completed in the late 2010s. It is notable for its very tall minaret and large-scale prayer facilities and associated cultural buildings.

The complex comprises a large prayer hall, a library, a museum and other cultural and administrative spaces, together with the minaret that dominates the city skyline. The mosque is designed to serve both religious functions and cultural programming at a city scale.

Construction began in the 2010s and the project was developed as a major national initiative to create a large central mosque and cultural complex for the capital. The complex represents a contemporary, large-scale addition to Algiers’ urban fabric.

The mosque sits on the coastline within the city of Algiers, facing the Mediterranean and occupying a prominent site near the central district. It is easily visible from many points across the city and along the waterfront.

  • Scale and landmark minaret: One of the largest mosques in Africa, with a very tall minaret that serves as a major city landmark.
  • Cultural and visitor facilities: Includes visitor-accessible cultural facilities such as a library and museum alongside the main prayer spaces; visiting arrangements vary by time and event.

What to See #

  • Minaret (265 m): The minaret rises to 265 metres and forms a prominent visual landmark visible across Algiers; it contains an observation platform and elevators.
  • Prayer hall, library and museum: The main prayer hall and mosque complex accommodate large congregations and include a library, museum and cultural facilities adjacent to the worship spaces.
