Dja Faunal Reserve
Nature Reserve Large rainforest reserve with rich biodiversity and primates
The Dja Faunal Reserve protects lowland tropical rainforest in eastern Cameroon and hosts diverse primates and forest species. Researchers and organized eco-tours visit for biodiversity surveys, primate observation and remote jungle travel.
The Dja Faunal Reserve is a large, well-preserved block of tropical rainforest in southeastern Cameroon, recognised for its high biodiversity and intact forest ecosystems. It is particularly noted for its populations of primates, forest elephants and other Congo Basin wildlife.
The reserve’s forests and river systems support a rich array of mammals, birds and plant species and it functions as an important conservation area within the regional forest corridor. Access is limited and regulated to protect sensitive species and habitats.
The reserve was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its outstanding natural values and relatively undisturbed rainforest character.
Geographically the Dja Reserve lies in Cameroon’s East Region, occupying lowland rainforest between major river systems and isolated from large urban centres by forested terrain.
- UNESCO and biodiversity: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its intact tropical rainforest and exceptional biodiversity, including populations of great apes and forest elephants.
How to Get to Dja Faunal Reserve #
The Dja Faunal Reserve is remote and located in Cameroon’s East Region. Access is by road from the regional centres (for example Bertoua) and requires long drives on unpaved forest tracks; visitors must arrange permits and travel with authorised guides or tour operators. There is no regular public transport into the reserve itself, so organised 4x4 transfers from the nearest towns are standard.
Tips for Visiting Dja Faunal Reserve #
- Treat the Dja Reserve as a remote, permit-only destination: obtain research or visitor permissions well in advance from Cameroon wildlife authorities and book through an authorized operator based in Yaoundé or Bertoua - independent access is very limited.
- Plan your visit for the dry season (roughly November-March) when river crossings and trails are more reliable; expect long overland or river transfers and schedule extra travel time to and from the reserve.
- Use local, accredited guides and community-run camps: much of the best wildlife viewing and forest access is organized through village guides and conservation partners who know current trails and sensitive areas that casual visitors often miss.
