Diyarbakır Fortress and Hevsel Gardens Cultural Landscape
Historical Site Massive city walls and fertile Hevsel river gardens
Diyarbakır’s fortress and the Hevsel Gardens combine near-contiguous basalt city walls, historic gates and riverine orchards along the Tigris. Visitors walk the ancient ramparts, explore Ottoman and earlier urban layers and visit gardened riverside plots.
Diyarbakır Fortress and Hevsel Gardens Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO‑listed urban complex in southeastern Turkey centred on remarkable basalt city walls and an adjacent riverside garden system. The ensemble illustrates long-term urban continuity and an integrated defensive and productive landscape.
Visitors see extensive black basalt ramparts and gates that form an exceptionally well-preserved city circuit, along with the Hevsel Gardens’ irrigated terraces and orchards that historically supported the city’s population. The site includes a citadel and historic urban fabric containing mosques, khans and residential quarters reflecting a succession of cultures.
The fortifications have Roman and subsequent Byzantine origins and were substantially rebuilt and extended in medieval and later periods, resulting in a multi-period masonry record. The Hevsel Gardens have been cultivated over centuries using Tigris water, supplying food, timber and fodder and maintaining the city’s ecological resilience.
The complex sits on the northern bank of the Tigris River in the city of Diyarbakır, in upper Mesopotamia of southeastern Turkey, with the urban area and riverine terraces forming the immediate landscape.
- Viewing points: Best vantage points for viewing the walls and gardens are from the riverbank and from the elevated sections of the city ramparts, where the relationship between fortification and fertile terraces is clear.
