Karaca Dağ Mountain

Karaca Dağ is a volcanic massif in Şanlıurfa Province in southeastern Turkey. The mountain and its slopes have been the focus of archaeological and botanically oriented research into early agriculture.

Hikers and researchers visit for the volcanic landscape, archaeological survey points and the mountain’s role in studies of the origins of domesticated cereals. There is limited tourist infrastructure compared with better-known sites in the region.

The massif formed through volcanic activity and provides upland habitats distinct from the surrounding Harran plain. Over recent decades scientific surveys have documented plant remains and archaeological evidence linking the area to early Neolithic subsistence developments.

Karaca Dağ sits within Şanlıurfa Province on the southeastern Anatolian plain, rising above the surrounding agricultural lands and contributing runoff into the local drainage of the Harran region.

• Agricultural significance: Has been identified by archaeobotanical research as a key locality in studies of early wheat domestication in southwest Anatolia.

Karaca Dağ lies within Şanlıurfa Province. The nearest city is Şanlıurfa (about a one-hour drive depending on exact starting point); access is usually by car or hired driver on regional roads. Local roads can be narrow-allow extra travel time.

• Visit archaeological viewpoints looking toward the Harran plain and Göbekli Tepe-Karaca Dağ's slopes are part of a broader pre-Neolithic landscape.
• If driving from Şanlıurfa, allow extra time for narrow rural roads and local traffic.
• Bring sun protection; summer temperatures are high and shade is limited on exposed slopes.
