Divankhana (Shirvanshah's Palace)
Monument 13th century palace chamber in Baku's Inner City
A circular stone hall inside Baku’s Old City, part of the Shirvanshah complex; visitors study its 15th-century architecture, inscriptions and the nearby palace museum.
Divankhana is a domed pavilion within the Palace of the Shirvanshahs complex in Baku’s Old City (Icherisheher). It dates to the 15th century and is one of several compact stone buildings grouped around the palace courtyard.
The structure is a small, vaulted chamber with characteristic carved stone detailing that visitors see as part of a circuit through the palace complex. It functions architecturally as a reception or ceremonial pavilion within the broader ensemble rather than as a freestanding monument with extensive grounds.
Built during the Shirvanshah dynasty period, the pavilion is part of the palace ensemble that served as a seat of regional rulers and their court. Over time the complex was adapted and preserved as a historic monument within the fortified Old City.
The Divankhana sits inside Icherisheher in central Baku, adjacent to other palace buildings and close to the Maiden Tower; access is via the Old City pedestrian routes and the palace courtyard.
- UNESCO site: Forms part of the Palace of the Shirvanshahs complex inside Baku's Icherisheher, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Date and form: A small domed pavilion dating to the 15th century within the palace ensemble, notable for carved stonework and interior vaulting.
