Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a zoological theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida; it opened on April 22, 1998 and covers roughly 580 acres, emphasizing live animals and large-scale themed environments.
The park is arranged into multiple themed lands such as Africa, Asia, Pandora - The World of Avatar, DinoLand U.S.A., and Discovery Island, with headline attractions including Kilimanjaro Safaris, Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage. The park combines traditional theme-park rides and shows with animal habitats, botanical displays and conservation-education exhibits.
Built and operated by The Walt Disney Company, the park was conceived as Disney’s largest and most conservation-focused park, integrating care facilities and research spaces alongside guest attractions. It has expanded since opening with major additions such as Pandora in 2017.
Located within the Walt Disney World Resort near Lake Buena Vista, the park lies west of Orlando - roughly 15 to 25 miles southwest of downtown Orlando depending on route.

How to Get to Disney's Animal Kingdom #
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is inside the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, about 20-25 miles (30-40 km) southwest of Orlando International Airport (MCO) and roughly the same distance from downtown Orlando by car. From Orlando drive via FL‑528 (Beachline) or FL‑417 and follow signs to World Drive/Disney World; follow World Drive to the Animal Kingdom entrance and on‑site parking.
Public transit to Animal Kingdom is primarily via Walt Disney World’s own bus and shuttle network from Disney-owned hotels and parking areas; paid shuttle services and rideshare drop‑offs serve the park entrance as well. If you are staying off‑site you can use shuttle operators or taxis/rideshares to the park entrance (walking from park drop‑off or lot to gates is short).
Tips for Visiting Disney's Animal Kingdom #
- Arrive at rope drop and head straight to Pandora - The World of Avatar (or Kilimanjaro Safaris) for the shortest waits; animals on Kilimanjaro Safaris are most active at dawn and dusk so early morning or late-afternoon safari slots give better sightings.
- Use the main park entrance and plan a loop: do major rides first, then move to the quieter animal trails and shows in the afternoon-many visitors skip the walking trails (Maharajah Jungle Trek, Gorilla Falls) so those are best for calmer, detail-rich experiences.
- If you want to avoid midday heat and the biggest crowds, leave mid-afternoon when many families take a break and return later for Pandora after dark, when the bioluminescent landscaping and lighting are at their best.
