Walt Disney World Resort is a large integrated entertainment complex near Orlando, Florida, United States, that opened on October 1, 1971. It is one of the world’s largest theme-park resorts and covers more than 25,000 acres.
The resort contains four major theme parks - Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom - plus two water parks, a large shopping and dining district and numerous Disney-owned hotels. Attractions range from classic themed rides and nightly fireworks to large-scale live shows and immersive lands.
Planned and developed by the Walt Disney Company after Walt Disney’s death, the resort expanded in stages through the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s with major additions including Epcot (opened 1982), Disney’s Hollywood Studios (opened 1989) and Disney’s Animal Kingdom (opened 1998). The site evolved into a multi-day destination and major employer for Central Florida.
The resort sits southwest of downtown Orlando, primarily within the municipal areas of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, about 20 miles (roughly 32 kilometers) from downtown Orlando. It is bounded by highways and residential areas and includes large tracts of managed landscape, lakes and golf courses.

How to Get to Walt Disney World Resort #
Walt Disney World Resort is southwest of Orlando, Florida. From Orlando International Airport (MCO) it is a road trip of roughly 20-30 miles (about 30-50 km) and typically takes 25-40 minutes by car depending on route and traffic; common driving routes use FL‑528 (Beachline Expressway) west or I‑4 west and follow signs for World Drive/Disney. There are also private shuttles and commercial airport transfer services that run between MCO or downtown Orlando and the resort; once on Disney property most destinations are reached by the resort’s internal bus or monorail services.
Tips for Visiting Walt Disney World Resort #
- Arrive before park opening (rope drop) to experience the most popular attractions with significantly shorter waits and to beat mid-morning tour-bus crowds.
- For lower-traffic entry to EPCOT, use the International Gateway if you're staying at or coming from the Skyliner/BoardWalk area; for Magic Kingdom plan for the Transportation and Ticket Center and factor in monorail/ferry timings.
- Use alternate resort transport (Skyliner, boats, monorail) where available to reduce time spent waiting for buses, and consider paid options (Genie+/Lightning Lanes) for headliners if you have a tight schedule.
