Dipylon
Archaeological Site Ancient Athenian gate near the Kerameikos cemetery
At the northwest corner of ancient Athens, the Dipylon Gate and adjoining cemetery at Kerameikos mark a major city entrance and burial ground; visitors walk ruins and visit the archaeological museum nearby.
The Dipylon is the monumental gate and adjacent funerary precinct of ancient Athens, preserved within the Kerameikos archaeological area. It is one of the main surviving points where the Classical city walls met the outside cemetery.
The city walls and gate belong to the defensive and ceremonial fabric of Athens from the Archaic and Classical periods; the Dipylon area remained a major funerary zone through the Classical era and later. Excavations in the modern era have revealed continuous use and rebuilding of walls and tombs across ancient Greek history.
The site sits in the northwestern corner of central Athens, within the Kerameikos district, a short distance from the city centre and northwest of the Acropolis. It is accessible from central Athens by short taxi or transit ride.
- Archaeological context: Sits within the Kerameikos archaeological zone, which preserves parts of Athens' Classical-era city walls and funerary monuments.
- Ceremonial role: Traditionally identified as the ceremonial entrance used for processions such as the Panathenaic procession in Classical Athens.
