Dionysiou Monastery

Dionysiou Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery on the Athos peninsula and one of the twenty monasteries that make up the monastic community of Mount Athos. It dates from the medieval period and remains an active monastic community.

Monastic highlights include the main katholikon with historic icons and liturgical furnishings, an extensive library and monastic cells, and coastal terraces overlooking the Aegean Sea. The site is noted for its religious art and traditional monastic life.

The monastery was established in the later medieval centuries and has retained religious function through successive historical periods, with buildings and collections expanded and restored at various times. It continues to follow the cenobitic monastic rule of Mount Athos.

Located on the western coast of the Athos peninsula in northern Greece, Dionysiou is reached by boat and footpaths that access the monastic settlements; the nearest major city on the mainland is Thessaloniki, which lies to the northwest of the peninsula.
