Didyma is the location of an ancient Greek sanctuary and temple complex in Aydın Province, Turkey, historically known for its great Temple of Apollo (the Didymaion). It was an important religious centre in antiquity.

The main attraction is the remains of the Temple of Apollo, where visitors can see large column drums, foundations, and sections of the temple plan that reflect Hellenistic monumental architecture. The archaeological site also preserves parts of the sacred precinct and the layout associated with the oracle and ritual activity.

Didyma served as an active sanctuary and oracle site in the Greek world from archaic through Hellenistic and Roman periods, with major building phases in the Hellenistic era that produced the extensive temple remains visible today. The complex was visited and maintained across successive cultural phases of the region.

The site lies on the Aegean coast of western Turkey near the modern town of Didim in Aydın Province, within easy reach of coastal roads and the Aegean shoreline.

  • Oracle and temple: The site is best known for its large Hellenistic temple complex dedicated to Apollo and for functioning historically as an oracle centre.

How to Get to Didyma #

The archaeological site of Didyma (Temple of Apollo) is adjacent to the modern town of Didim in Aydın Province. It’s reachable by road from İzmir by regional highways and expressways (typical tourist route is via the O‑31/Aydın corridor and then coastal/local roads); the drive from İzmir is commonly around 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. Intercity buses serve Didim and from the town center a short taxi or local dolmuş (minibus) will take you the few kilometres to the site.

Tips for Visiting Didyma #

  • Visit early in the morning to avoid the daytime heat and harsh shadows on the temple ruins-early light also gives the best photos of the colonnade and pronaos.
  • Combine Didyma with nearby classical sites (Miletus and Priene) on the same day-the three are in the same Aegean region and commonly visited together by regional tours.
  • Allow time to walk the full site from the main entrance toward the temple façade to appreciate the scale and oracle area; the main sanctuary precinct is more impressive when approached on foot rather than stopping only at the front columns.
