Diancang Shan is a mountain range in Yunnan province near Dali, commonly known as Cangshan, and is a major scenic landmark for the Dali region. The range includes multiple peaks and steep escarpments and is a prominent natural boundary along the western shore of Erhai Lake.
The range offers ridge walks, summit viewpoints and shorter scenic trails that look down onto Erhai Lake; a passenger cableway provides quicker access to high viewpoints. Popular viewpoints show long panoramas across the lake and the Dali plain, and many routes include stone steps, streams and waterfalls.
The mountains are a natural feature rather than a constructed site; they have long been part of the cultural and geographic setting of the Dali area and contain historic temples and traditional footpaths used by local communities. Over time the area has been managed as a scenic and recreational zone with marked trails and visitor facilities.
Geographically the range runs immediately west of Dali city and Erhai Lake in northwestern Yunnan. The slopes descend toward the lake and the city, forming a compact mountain backdrop immediately adjacent to Dali Ancient Town.
- Relation to Erhai Lake: Runs immediately west of Erhai Lake and forms the dramatic western backdrop to Dali Ancient Town, making shoreline viewpoints especially photogenic.
- Elevation and weather: Highest summit stands at about 4,122 meters, so weather can change quickly and temperatures fall sharply above 2,000 meters.
What to See #
- Malong Peak: The highest summit in the range, Malong Peak, reaches roughly 4,122 meters and is the focus for high-altitude hikes and ridge walks.
- Cangshan Cableway: A passenger cableway provides rapid access from lower trails to higher viewpoints, shortening what would otherwise be a long ascent on foot.
- Qingbi Stream and trail area: A network of streams and carved trails on the mountain's eastern slopes offers short walks, waterfalls, and viewpoints over Erhai Lake.
