Diamond Rock
Island Volcanic basalt islet off Martinique with nautical history
A small volcanic islet off Martinique, Diamond Rock appears on coastal boat tours. Visitors pass by for diving and snorkeling nearby, seabird observation and short excursions from Martinique’s maritime towns.
Diamond Rock is a small, steep-sided basalt islet off the southwest coast of Martinique near the town of Le Diamant, notable for its dramatic profile and maritime history. The rock is a natural volcanic outcrop rising directly from the sea and is visible from local beaches and viewpoints.
The islet’s sheer cliffs support seabird colonies and make it accessible only by boat; it is also protected for its natural and historical value. During the Napoleonic era the rock was temporarily occupied and armed by the British navy and was even commissioned as the sloop “HMS Diamond Rock” for a brief period.
The rock lies a short distance offshore from Le Diamant and is a common subject of coastal views and local boat excursions, with the town’s shoreline providing the principal vantage points for observation.
- Height and profile: The islet rises steeply from the sea to a height of roughly 150-175 metres and has sheer basalt cliffs that are visible from the nearby shoreline.
- Historical use: It was commissioned and used by the British Royal Navy as the sloop HMS Diamond Rock in 1804-1805 during the Napoleonic wars, a unique naval episode in the islet's history.
