Dholavira is a major archaeological site of the Indus (Harappan) civilisation in Gujarat, India, noted for its urban planning and large water-management works. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021.

Excavations have revealed a fortified citadel, a lower town, streets and an elaborate system of stone-lined reservoirs and channels that demonstrate sophisticated Harappan water engineering. A unique Harappan inscribed signboard with ten characters was also recovered at the site.

Dholavira was occupied from the third millennium BCE into the second millennium BCE and represents one of the larger and better-preserved urban centres of the Harappan culture. Major systematic excavations were carried out from the 1990s under archaeologists such as R. S. Bisht, producing extensive documentation of its layout and infrastructure.

The site lies in the arid Rann of Kutch region of Gujarat and is accessed by road from regional towns in Kutch; the surrounding landscape is flat saltplain and scrub typical of the area.

  • UNESCO inscription: Dholavira was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as an exceptional example of Harappan urbanism and water engineering.
  • Archaeology: Excavations led by archaeologist R. S. Bisht from the 1990s revealed well-preserved town planning, large reservoirs and public architecture dating to the third and second millennia BCE.

Tips for Visiting Dholavira #

  • Visit Dholavira in the cooler months (roughly November-February) when daytime temperatures are most comfortable and the remote site is easier to explore.
  • Use Bhuj as your usual staging point and allow a full day for travel and on-site exploration - the ruins are remote and the layout is spread out, so guided interpretation helps.
  • Make a point to study the site's large stepped reservoirs and water-management structures; these engineering features and the three-part city plan are the most significant elements that some visitors overlook.
