Dholavira is a major archaeological site of the Indus (Harappan) civilisation in Gujarat, India, noted for its urban planning and large water-management works. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021.
Excavations have revealed a fortified citadel, a lower town, streets and an elaborate system of stone-lined reservoirs and channels that demonstrate sophisticated Harappan water engineering. A unique Harappan inscribed signboard with ten characters was also recovered at the site.
Dholavira was occupied from the third millennium BCE into the second millennium BCE and represents one of the larger and better-preserved urban centres of the Harappan culture. Major systematic excavations were carried out from the 1990s under archaeologists such as R. S. Bisht, producing extensive documentation of its layout and infrastructure.
The site lies in the arid Rann of Kutch region of Gujarat and is accessed by road from regional towns in Kutch; the surrounding landscape is flat saltplain and scrub typical of the area.
