The Dendera Temple complex is an ancient Egyptian religious site on the west bank of the Nile near the modern town of Dendera in Qena Governorate. The complex is centred on the Temple of Hathor, largely constructed and decorated during the late Ptolemaic and Roman periods.

Many of the visible structures date from Ptolemaic rule into the Roman era, with continued reuse and modification in later periods; the site preserves architectural and sculptural programmes spanning those centuries.
The complex lies near the modern village of Dendera on the Nile’s west bank in Upper Egypt, north of the city of Qena.
- Dendera Zodiac: The complex's relief programmes include an astronomical ceiling and extensive Ptolemaic and Roman-era reliefs; the famous Dendera Zodiac bas-relief originated here and is now in the Louvre.

How to Get to Dendera Temple complex #
The Dendera Temple complex is on the east bank of the Nile in Qena Governorate. Most visitors travel by road from Luxor or the city of Qena: organized day tours and local minibuses run from Luxor and Qena to Dendera, or you can drive along the Nile-side road to the temple. From Luxor it is commonly visited as a day trip (by car or organised coach); once at the Dendera site the main temple complex is a short walk from the on-site parking and visitor area.
Tips for Visiting Dendera Temple complex #
- Arrive at opening or late afternoon to see the temple reliefs with strong raking light and to avoid the busiest mid-day period when cruise and tour groups often arrive from Qena/Luxor.
- Ask at the ticket desk about access to the upper terraces/roof before buying tickets - the ceiling zodiac and roof details are highlights but access can be restricted for conservation, so confirm availability on the day.
- Don't rush past peripheral structures: the complex includes smaller chapels and a Hathor temple that many visitors only glance at; allow time to walk the site slowly for carved reliefs and inscriptions.
