Deccan Plateau
Plateau Large volcanic plateau covering much of southern India
The vast Deccan Plateau covers much of southern India with basaltic lava flows, mesas and dry forests. Travelers encounter historic forts and temples, hill‑station retreats and broad rural landscapes rather than concentrated tourist hubs.
The Deccan Plateau is a large elevated plateau covering much of peninsular India and forming the core of the country’s southern interior. Its geology is dominated in many areas by extensive volcanic basalt known as the Deccan Traps.
The landscape comprises rolling hills, river valleys and plateau plains with mixed agricultural use, historic forts and hilltop sites in several regions. Geologically notable exposures of layered basalt and associated soil types are visible across the plateau.
The volcanic eruptions that produced the Deccan Traps occurred around the end of the Cretaceous period and laid down thick basalt sequences that shape soils and drainage patterns today. Human settlement over millennia established agrarian and urban centres adapted to the plateau environment.
Occupying the central and southern portions of the Indian peninsula, the plateau lies between the Western Ghats to the west and the Eastern Ghats to the east and extends across multiple Indian states.
- Deccan Traps: Much of the plateau is underlain by the Deccan Traps, extensive basalt flows formed by volcanic eruptions around the end of the Cretaceous period.
- Elevation range: Typical elevations range from roughly 300 to 600 metres above sea level, forming a broad elevated peninsular interior between the Western and Eastern Ghats.
How to Get to Deccan Plateau #
The Deccan Plateau covers much of peninsular India (central and southern India) and is accessed via multiple major cities such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune and Nagpur. Each city offers road, rail and air links into plateau towns; major national highways and rail corridors cross the region and driving distances vary by chosen entry point. Choose the nearest major city (for example Hyderabad or Pune) and proceed by regional road or rail to the specific plateau area you plan to visit.
Tips for Visiting Deccan Plateau #
- Use major cities - Hyderabad, Pune, Bengaluru or Nagpur depending on which part you want to explore - as practical gateways to reach representative sites on the Deccan Plateau rather than trying to ''visit the plateau'' in one trip.
- Plan travel outside the hot pre‑monsoon months; the plateau's interior can be very hot and dusty in summer, while post‑monsoon through winter (October-February) offers the most comfortable conditions and clearer skies.
- Focus on specific geological, historical or ecological highlights (basalt trap formations, cave temples, and UNESCO sites such as Hampi) and check local access or conservation rules for protected areas before visiting.
Best Time to Visit Deccan Plateau #
For most of the Deccan Plateau the most pleasant time to visit is the cooler, post-monsoon months (October-March), avoiding the hot pre-monsoon period.
