Debre Libanos

Debre Libanos is a major Ethiopian Orthodox monastic complex and pilgrimage site in the Amhara/central highlands region, founded in the medieval period by Saint Tekle Haymanot. It is a principal spiritual center for the Ethiopian Church and a location of historic religious scholarship.

The monastery complex includes a main church, monastic buildings and museum holdings of manuscripts and religious objects; visitors can observe traditional liturgies and view religious artifacts. A steep canyon viewpoint and trails give expansive views over the Jemma River gorge below the monastery.

The monastery was established in the medieval era by Tekle Haymanot and developed into a major clerical and educational center of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. In 1937 it suffered a massacre by Italian occupation forces that resulted in many deaths among monks and pilgrims.

Debre Libanos sits in the Ethiopian highlands overlooking the Jemma River gorge, in the Amhara region northwest/north of Addis Ababa by road (around 100 km by typical routes). It occupies a prominent, elevated position above the surrounding countryside.
