Dealey Plaza
Park Historic Dallas plaza site of JFK assassination
Triangular plaza in downtown Dallas known as the site of President Kennedy’s 1963 assassination; tourists visit the Sixth Floor Museum, preserved sightlines and guided historical tours.
Dealey Plaza is an urban park and traffic circle in downtown Dallas, Texas, best known as the location where President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot on 22 November 1963. The plaza is laid out with formal lawns, a small colonnade, and a trajectory of Elm Street that became the focus of the assassination investigation.
Key features of the site include the former Texas School Book Depository building overlooking the plaza, the area commonly called the Grassy Knoll, and the triple underpass to the west. The former depository houses the Sixth Floor Museum, which presents documentary material on the assassination and its aftermath.
The plaza was designated a National Historic Landmark to recognise its association with the assassination and subsequent national significance; the area retains much of its 1963 spatial arrangement and is interpreted for visitors through museums and on-site panels. Conservation management balances public access with commemoration and interpretation.
Dealey Plaza sits in the western part of downtown Dallas along Elm Street, close to the central business district and reachable from city transit and road networks.
- Historic designation: The site is a designated U.S. National Historic Landmark centred on the events of 22 November 1963; interpretive signage and museum exhibits explain the sequence of events and subsequent investigations.
- Visitor logistics: Downtown Dallas locations around the plaza are urban and busy; the Sixth Floor Museum operates timed-entry and has a separate admission, while the plaza itself is accessible as a public space.
What to See #
- Sixth Floor Museum: The Sixth Floor Museum occupies the sixth and seventh floors of the former Texas School Book Depository building and interprets the assassination of President John F. Kennedy with exhibits, photographs and archival material.
- Grassy Knoll: The Grassy Knoll is a small, raised area on the northwest side of the plaza that became central to public attention after the 1963 assassination; it remains an identified viewpoint within the plaza.
- Triple Underpass: The triple railroad underpass forms the plaza's western boundary and is part of the traffic and pedestrian layout preserved within the historic district.
How to Get to Dealey Plaza #
Dealey Plaza sits in downtown Dallas at the west end of Elm Street beside the West End Historic District. The site is a short walk (about 5 minutes) from DART light-rail West End Station; many downtown buses also stop within a few blocks. From Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) it’s roughly a 25‑mile (≈40 km) drive into downtown Dallas (about 25-35 minutes off‑peak); there are nearby parking garages and street parking around the plaza.
Tips for Visiting Dealey Plaza #
- Arrive very early (before the late-morning tourist rush) or late afternoon to get clearer photos of Elm Street and Dealey Plaza; if you plan to visit The Sixth Floor Museum, buy timed-entry tickets in advance as popular slots often sell out.
- Use the designated pedestrian viewpoints and crossings-Dealey Plaza is an active roadway with traffic and memorial signage, so observe ropes and signs rather than climbing monuments to get a good view (the grassy knoll area is a common viewpoint).
- Avoid searching for curbside parking around the plaza; instead park in nearby West End Historic District lots or use DART/public transit and walk in-this reduces time spent circling for spots and keeps your visit focused on the site and nearby plaques.
Best Time to Visit Dealey Plaza #
Visit in spring or autumn for pleasant weather; for the Sixth Floor Museum, go on weekday mornings or book ahead to avoid crowds.
