Deal Castle
Castle Tudor artillery fortress on Kent coast
Built under Henry VIII, Deal Castle sits on Kent’s coast as a concentric Tudor artillery fort; visitors explore its bastions, casemates and coastal walkways to study 16th-century military architecture.
Deal Castle is a Tudor artillery castle on the seafront at Deal in Kent, England, constructed in 1539-1540 under Henry VIII as part of coastal defenses. It is one of the best-preserved of the Tudor artillery fortifications on the English coast.
The castle’s distinctive flower-like plan features a circular central keep with six rounded bastions and gun platforms, giving panoramic views over the English Channel and the town of Deal. Exhibits and interior rooms illustrate its 16th-century defensive role, and visitors can walk the ramparts and inner courtyards.
Built as a Device Fort to counter threats from continental Europe, Deal Castle housed artillery and a garrison during the 16th century and was adapted in later centuries for changing coastal defense needs. It passed into state care and is now preserved as a historic monument managed for public access and interpretation.
The castle sits on the seafront in the town of Deal on the Kent coast, facing the English Channel between Dover and Ramsgate and adjacent to the town’s seafront promenade.
