City City in Hubei Province, China
A former copper-mining hub, Daye wears rust and tea-stained roofs; visitors pick over the Mining Museum, walk lake trails and eat Hubei freshwater fish stews in neighborhood restaurants.
Why Visit Daye? #
An industrial city with surprising green corners, Daye draws visitors for its mix of mining history and lakeside relaxation. Daye Lake and the Daye Mining Museum give a window into the town’s past, while riverside parks and local Hubei snacks provide a low-key culinary scene. Travelers curious about regional industry, provincial culture and off-the-beaten-track urban landscapes will find Daye an unexpected stop between larger Hubei centers.
Who's Daye For?
Daye’s lake and surrounding low hills offer easy hikes, riverside walks and simple birdwatching near the Daye Lake Scenic Area. Trails are short and suited to half-day outings; rural farmland and forest patches feel peaceful compared with Hubei’s bigger cities.
Local economy centers on mining and manufacturing; logistics links to Wuhan make Daye a regional industrial node. Small industrial parks and state firms mean decent business hotels around the city center and reasonable transport for regional trade.
Quiet lakeside parks and modest hotels near Daye city center make for low-key weekend escapes from Wuhan. Romantic options are simple-boat rides, tea houses, and sunset walks-best for couples who want uncrowded, inexpensive outings.
Local Hubei snacks, river fish dishes and small wet markets near the bus station offer authentic, cheap meals. Expect basic family-run restaurants and noodle shops rather than fine dining; try local freshwater fish and spicy cold noodles.

How to Get to Daye
Daye (Hubei) is easiest to reach via Wuhan Tianhe International Airport or by rail through nearby Huangshi/Huangshi East stations. The city has local rail and regular intercity bus services linking it to Wuhan and other prefectural towns.
Wuhan Tianhe International Airport (WUH): The nearest major airport for Daye is Wuhan Tianhe International Airport. From the airport you can take the Metro Line 2 (Airport Express) to Wuhan Railway Station (about 30-40 minutes, fare around CNY 6-8) and then catch a train to Huangshi/Daye (see train card). A direct taxi from the airport to Daye typically takes about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic and costs roughly CNY 250-400. There are also long-distance coach services from the airport area to Huangshi/Daye; coaches take about 1.5-2 hours and cost roughly CNY 40-80.
Train: Daye is on the regional rail network and is served via local and intercity trains. Major nearby stations on the high-speed network are Huangshi East (黄石东) and Huangshi (黄石站) on the Wuhan-Jiujiang corridor; Wuhan to Huangshi East takes about 30-45 minutes by high-speed train (2nd class fares typically CNY 20-40). Some conventional services stop at Daye Railway Station (大冶站), giving direct connections from Wuhan in roughly 1-1.5 hours; fares on conventional trains are generally CNY 15-40.
Bus: Regular long-distance coaches run between Wuhan and Daye/Huangshi from Wuhan’s long-distance bus terminals and the airport area; journey time is about 1.5-2 hours and fares are commonly CNY 30-70. Local intercity and county buses connect Daye with neighbouring towns and Huangshi; expect to pay cash or use mobile payment apps for tickets.
How to Get Around Daye
Daye is a working city best navigated with a mix of local buses and taxis/Didi for convenience; intercity travel is fastest by high-speed train to Huangshi East followed by a short taxi. For short in-town trips, shared bikes and walking are practical; plan train or coach schedules in advance for connections to Wuhan.
- Intercity / High-speed trains (CNY 20-60) - High-speed services to Huangshi East are the quickest way to reach the Daye area from Wuhan and other regional hubs. Trains from Wuhan to Huangshi East take about 30-45 minutes; from there a short taxi or local bus will get you into Daye. Book tickets in advance on 12306.cn or use app agents; check whether a given service stops at Daye or only at Huangshi East.
- Long-distance buses (CNY 30-70) - Coaches link Daye with Wuhan, Huangshi and neighbouring counties and are a cheap alternative where direct train services are limited. Expect travel times of 1.5-2 hours to Wuhan depending on traffic. Buy tickets at bus stations or board and pay by cash/mobile payment when available; services run frequently but timetables can change seasonally.
- Local buses (CNY 1-3) - Daye has a modest local bus network covering the urban area and nearby townships; routes are inexpensive and useful for getting around if you are on a budget. Buses are slow compared with taxis and may be crowded at peak times. Have small change or a mobile payment app ready - many routes accept e-payment rather than cash.
- Taxis & Didi (CNY 10-120) - Taxis are widely available and convenient for door-to-door travel; flag-down fares start low but long drives to/from Wuhan or airport can add up. Didi (ride-hailing) also operates in Hubei and is often cheaper and easier than hailing a taxi, especially for intercity trips to Huangshi or the railway stations. For airport transfers expect a fare in the CNY hundreds; within Daye typical short trips cost CNY 10-40.
- Shared bikes / e-bikes (CNY 0.5-2 per 30 min) - Dockless shared bikes and e-bikes (Meituan/other providers) are available for short journeys inside town and are handy for last-mile trips. Pricing is usually per-30-minutes and charged to a mobile payment account; check bike availability and parking rules to avoid fines. Bikes are best for short, flat rides - not ideal in heavy rain or at night if street lighting is poor.
- Walking - Central Daye is compact enough for short explorations on foot - walking is the simplest way to see local shops and markets. Sidewalk quality varies and some areas are industrial or lack pedestrian facilities, so wear comfortable shoes and be cautious crossing busy roads. Walking between neighbourhoods is feasible but for longer trips pick a bus or taxi.
