Day Forest National Park
National Park Rare highland forest hosting endemic flora and wildlife
Day Forest National Park on Djibouti’s Goda Massif preserves montane juniper and boxwood stands; hikers and birdwatchers visit for shaded trails, cooler mountain air and local Afar village access.
Day Forest National Park (Forêt du Day) is a protected highland forest area in the Goda Massif of Djibouti’s Tadjourah region, conserving one of the country’s few remaining woodland and montane habitats. The park covers upland plateaus and valleys where cooler temperatures and higher rainfall allow tree growth not found in the surrounding lowlands.
Trail viewpoints, forest patches and small ridgelines are the main visitor features, and the area is important for biodiversity, including endemic or locally restricted bird species. The park is managed for conservation and limited visitation rather than large-scale tourism.
Historically the forest has persisted as a remnant of wider upland woodlands and has been recognized for conservation because of its ecological distinctiveness and species it supports. Conservation measures and local management aim to protect water catchments and forest cover.
Day Forest lies in the Goda Mountains in central Djibouti’s Tadjourah area; its higher-elevation terrain contrasts sharply with Djibouti’s coastal plains and desert regions.
- Unique highland woodland: The forest supports remnant juniper and other highland woodlands that are rare in Djibouti and provide habitat for endemic and range-restricted bird species.
