David Gareja monastery complex
Religious Site Rock-hewn monastery complex on Georgia-Azerbaijan border
Cluster of rock-cut Georgian Orthodox monasteries on a semi-arid ridge near the Azerbaijan border, featuring cave cells and frescoes. Visitors hike between sites, enter chapels and study monastic architecture against sparse landscapes.
The David Gareja monastery complex is a network of rock-hewn Georgian Orthodox monastic sites carved into a semi-arid ridge on the borderlands between Georgia and Azerbaijan, founded in the 6th century by Saint David of Gareja. It is notable for its cave churches and medieval frescoes.
Visitors explore a series of interconnected cave churches, cells and refectories with surviving medieval frescoes, including the principal Lavra complex and several smaller clustered monastic sites. The complex offers extensive cliff-side walkways and viewpoints over the surrounding steppe, and many of the painted interiors retain decorative programing from the 9th to 14th centuries.
Founded in the 6th century by Saint David, the complex expanded over succeeding centuries into an important religious and cultural centre of medieval Georgia. It underwent phases of construction, decoration and partial abandonment under regional pressures and changing political borders, and some parts of the complex now lie very close to or across the modern Azerbaijan-Georgia border.
David Gareja sits on a rocky ridge in southeastern Georgia’s Kvemo Kartli region near the Azerbaijan frontier, roughly an hour to an hour-and-a-half by road southeast of Tbilisi depending on route and traffic.
- Practical note: Bring water and sturdy shoes-approach trails are steep and the site sits in a semi-arid, exposed landscape with limited shade.
What to See #
- Lavra (main monastery): The Lavra complex at the core of the site, containing rock-cut churches, monastic cells and refectories with restored and original frescoes dating from the medieval period.

- Outlying hermitages and chapels: Scattered hermitages, rock cells and frescoed chapels across the ridge that together form the multi-part complex visited today.
