Dartmoor National Park
Park Protected moorland in southwest England with tors
Granite moorland in southwest England defined by tors, blanket bog and stone-harrowed landscapes; visitors come for hiking, wild pony viewing, rock-climbing and to explore ancient stone rows and old mining remains.
Dartmoor National Park is a protected upland area in central Devon, England, established as a national park in 1951 and covering roughly 954 square kilometres. It is defined by granite moorland, prominent tors, and extensive prehistoric archaeology.
Human activity on Dartmoor stretches back to the Neolithic and Bronze Age, visible in standing stones, stone rows, and field systems. Over centuries the moor has been used for grazing, tin working, and military training, and it was formally protected under national park status in the mid-20th century.
The park occupies central Devon in south-west England, roughly inland from the south coast and north of Plymouth. It is a mix of open moorland, wooded valleys, and agricultural land, with access from towns around the park perimeter.
