Park Remote Panamanian rainforest park and UNESCO World Heritage site

Darién National Park is a large protected rainforest and wetland area in Darién Province in eastern Panama, recognized for its biological diversity and intact tropical ecosystems. It was established in 1980 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and the Man and the Biosphere Programme in 1981.

The park contains extensive lowland and montane rainforest, mangrove coasts, rivers and swampland, and is important for large mammals, birds and plant endemism. Highlights for field researchers and experienced eco-travelers include dense primary forest, river corridors and cloud forest zones.

The park was created by the Panamanian government to protect the Darién Gap’s rainforest and indigenous territories; it has long-standing cultural connections with Emberá and Wounaan communities who live in and around the park. Over time it has remained largely undeveloped, with conservation and limited-use policies to maintain habitat integrity.

Geographically the park occupies the eastern end of Panama bordering Colombia, covering rugged terrain of lowland coastlines and the Serranía del Darién mountain chain. The nearest major city is Panama City, several hundred kilometres to the west, and access is typically from local towns in Darién Province by river or air.

  • UNESCO status: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biosphere reserve for its high biodiversity and intact tropical ecosystems.
  • Access and logistics: Access is logistically challenging - travel typically requires local guides, river or air transport, and permits in some zones.

What to See #

  • Serranía del Darién: A series of mountain ranges and peaks forming the Serrania del Darién, including highland forests and cloud forest areas that reach elevations over 1,000 metres.
  • Cerro Tacarcuna: Cerro Tacarcuna, a prominent peak within the park that rises above the surrounding lowlands and is noted for its endemic flora and cultural significance to local indigenous groups.

Tips for Visiting Darién National Park #

  • Access is logistically challenging and should be done with an experienced, authorised guide or operator-arrange permits, transport and community visits through a reputable Panama-based outfitter rather than attempting independent overland travel.
  • Plan for the dry season (roughly December-April) when trails and river crossings are at their most passable; heavy rains outside that window often make routes muddy or impassable and increase mosquito and leech activity.

Best Time to Visit Darién National Park #

Visit in the dry season (roughly December-April) when access is easier and overland/river travel is more reliable.

Dry season (recommended)
Dec-Apr · 24-32°C
Relatively drier and more accessible trails and river crossings-better for boat access and wildlife spotting.
Wet season
May-Nov · 24-32°C
Heavy rains and muddy conditions are common; parts of the park can be hard to reach and navigation more difficult.
