Dara (Mesopotamia)

Dara is an archaeological site in southeastern Turkey known for its large late antique fortress and urban ruins. The settlement was established in the early sixth century and served as a major Byzantine frontier stronghold.

Key visible features include massive defensive walls, an organised street plan with public buildings, and extensive rock-cut cisterns and tunnels. The near-complete fortification system and waterworks are principal attractions for visitors and researchers.

The city was founded in the reign of the Byzantine emperor Anastasius I around 505 AD as a fortified base on the empire’s eastern frontier. Over subsequent centuries the site saw military engagements and changing control between Byzantines and regional powers, after which it declined and was eventually abandoned.

Dara is located in Mardin Province in southeastern Turkey, set on rocky terrain near the modern rural villages of the district. It lies within the archaeological landscape of upper Mesopotamia and is accessed by regional roads from the provincial centres.
