Dar al-Hajar, often called the Rock Palace, is a distinctive multi-storey palace built atop a carved natural rock outcrop near Wadi Dhahr in the Sana’a governorate of Yemen. It was constructed in the early 20th century as an elite residence.
The building’s stepped, tower-like structure sits directly on a tall isolated rock and presents terraces and ornate stonework that are visible from the wadi below. The palace is frequently photographed for its dramatic siting and traditional Yemeni architectural details.
The present rock palace was established in the 20th century as a summer retreat for Yemen’s ruling imam, incorporating an earlier structure on the same rock; it became an iconic example of vernacular palace architecture.
Dar al-Hajar stands in Wadi Dhahr approximately 15 kilometres northwest of central Sana’a, set above a narrow wadi and accessed from the local road network.

How to Get to Dar al-Hajar #
Dar al‑Hajar (the Rock Palace) sits above Wadi Dhahr near Sanaa. It is reachable by road from central Sana’a by car or taxi - the site is roughly 15 km from central Sana’a and typically a 30-45 minute drive depending on traffic and road conditions. Follow the local road into Wadi Dhahr to the palace; visitor access is by the roadside car park and a short walk.
Tips for Visiting Dar al-Hajar #
- Plan photographs for early morning or late afternoon light-the palace's perched silhouette above Wadi Dhahr is most dramatic at those times and easier to photograph from the opposite valley side.
- Confirm current security conditions and entry rules before travel and arrange a local guide; Dar al‑Hajar is close to Sana'a but access and visitor services have been affected by wider conditions in Yemen at times.
- If interior access is limited, use the roadside viewpoints along Wadi Dhahr to get good compositions of the palace on its rock pedestal-many visitors only see it from the main approach and miss the better valley viewpoints.
Best Time to Visit Dar al-Hajar #
When travel is feasible, the cooler drier months (roughly October-February) tend to be most comfortable for visiting the rock palace and immediate area.
