Dan (ancient city)
Archaeological Site Ancient Israelite city and archaeological site in Galilee
Tel Dan preserves Bronze- and Iron-Age ruins, monumental gates and spring-fed wetlands in northern Israel; visitors explore excavations, ancient inscriptions and layered archaeological remains.
Dan is an ancient city and archaeological site in northern Israel, traditionally associated with the biblical city of Dan and situated at the headwaters of the Jordan River. The site contains extensive remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages and is a major archaeological location in the region.
Excavations have revealed fortified city gates, domestic and public architecture, and an inscribed monument known as the Tel Dan Stele discovered in the 20th century. The combination of archaeological ruins and perennial springs makes the site both historically and ecologically important.
The site was an important regional center in antiquity and is referenced in historical and biblical sources; archaeological work has documented occupation phases, fortification construction, and material culture spanning many centuries. Excavations and conservation efforts have been carried out by teams of archaeologists since the mid-20th century.
Tel Dan lies in northern Israel near the modern kibbutz of Dan, at the foot of Mount Hermon and close to the country’s northern borders, within a protected nature reserve that preserves both the ruins and surrounding wetland habitats.
- Reserve access: The archaeological area is incorporated into the Tel Dan Nature Reserve, which combines archaeological remains and spring-fed riverine habitats with marked trails for visitors.
What to See #
- Tel Dan mound: The archaeological mound (Tel Dan) contains successive occupation layers with remnants of Bronze and Iron Age fortifications, streets and domestic structures.
- Tel Dan Stele: An inscribed monument discovered at the site, known as the Tel Dan Stele, bearing an Aramaic inscription of historical significance for regional studies.
- Dan springs and reserve: Natural springs at the headwaters of the Jordan River form part of the protected nature reserve and supply lush riparian habitat around the ruins.
Tips for Visiting Dan (ancient city) #
- Visit Tel Dan early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and to catch the spring source and boardwalks in softer light-those times are also quieter for photos and wildlife.
- Enter via the main visitor center/parking area (the nature reserve entrance) where maps and signs orient you to both the archaeological tel and the nature trails; start with the tel before following the river walk to the Dan spring to get the full historical + natural experience.
- Don't miss the Iron Age city-gate and circuit of exposed masonry on the tel-there are explanatory panels but no large crowds, so allow 20-40 minutes to take the short path around the ruins and read the panels.
- Combine a visit with nearby Banias/Caesarea Philippi on the same day-they're close by and together give a fuller picture of the region's archaeology and springs, and splitting sites between morning and afternoon helps avoid crowds at each.
