Damascus Gate
Monument Prominent Jerusalem Old City gate and historic market entrance
One of the Old City’s main gates in Jerusalem, Damascus Gate provides access to the Muslim Quarter and nearby markets; visitors note its Ottoman-era façade, heavy foot traffic and proximity to historic lanes.
Damascus Gate is the principal northern gate in the Old City walls of Jerusalem, forming a major entrance to the Old City’s Muslim and Christian quarters.
The gate provides direct access to the bustling streets and market areas inside the northern Old City and presents an imposing stone façade on the exterior plaza; it is one of the best-known city gates for both pedestrians and vehicles approaching from the north.
The present gate was rebuilt in the 16th century during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent atop earlier Roman and medieval gateworks; the site has functioned as a main northern entrance for centuries and retains archaeological remains of earlier fortifications.
Set in the northern wall of Jerusalem’s Old City, the gate faces the commercial axis that historically led northwards toward Nablus and Damascus and sits at the boundary between the Old City and adjacent neighbourhoods.
- Local name and approach: The gate is known by its Arabic name Bab al-Amud and for a broad plaza and stairway that connect the Old City to the surrounding neighbourhood to the north.
