Dalanzadgad (Ömnögovi) is best visited in spring or late autumn for comfortable desert exploration; summers are extremely hot and winters are cool and clear. Dune trips are easiest outside peak heat.

How to Get to Dalanzadgad#
Dalanzadgad, gateway to the Gobi, is most easily reached by a short domestic flight from Ulaanbaatar. Overland buses and private transfers are available but are long; within the town taxis and walking are the norm.
Dalanzadgad Airport (DLZ): Dalanzadgad (Ömnögovi) has regular domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar; airlines operate year-round and flights are about 1-1.5 hours. On arrival a taxi to town takes around 10-20 minutes and costs a few thousand MNT.
Ulaanbaatar (ULN): Most visitors fly into Ulaanbaatar and connect onward to Dalanzadgad; the domestic terminal handles scheduled services - book ahead, especially for high season (Gobi tourism season).
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Dalanzadgad; the rail network does not serve this part of Ömnögovi province conveniently for travellers.
Bus / Road: Overland buses and private transfers run from Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad; road trips take much longer than flights (often 8-12+ hours) but are possible. Many visitors prefer to fly for time efficiency when visiting the Gobi.
How to Get Around Dalanzadgad#
Fly to Dalanzadgad for the greatest time savings; most Gobi tours depart from here by 4x4. Road travel is possible but takes much longer-inside town taxis and walking are sufficient.
- Domestic flight (Varies (seasonal)) - Flights to DLZ from Ulaanbaatar are frequent in tourist season and the quickest option for reaching the Gobi. Airlines include national and local carriers-book early for peak months.
- Tour transfer / 4x4 (Varies by tour) - Most travellers join organized tours from Dalanzadgad into the Gobi in 4x4 vehicles. These typically include hotel pick-up and are the practical way to visit dunes and remote sites.
- Intercity bus / minivan (Varies) - Buses and minibuses link Dalanzadgad with Ulaanbaatar and provincial towns. Overland travel is long but can be economical if you have time; schedules vary by season.
- Taxi (MNT 3,000-15,000) - Local taxis handle airport transfers and short trips within Dalanzadgad. Confirm fares in advance if meters are not used, especially for longer transfers to tour start points.
- Walking - Dalanzadgad’s centre is small and easy to explore on foot. Wear sun protection in summer and layers for cooler desert nights.
