Dadar is a densely built urban neighbourhood in Mumbai, Maharashtra, known as a long-established residential, commercial and transport hub in the city. It sits at the meeting of Mumbai’s Central and Western suburban rail corridors and is a focal point for local commerce.

The area contains several notable local attractions and amenities. Major public open space includes Shivaji Park, used for cricket practice, public meetings and recreation; the locality also hosts a large wholesale flower market and busy shopping streets. Two adjacent railway stations serve different suburban lines, making it a primary interchange for commuters.

The district developed as part of Mumbai’s expansion in the 19th and 20th centuries, evolving from residential plots and public works into a mixed commercial and civic centre. Over time public spaces and transport facilities established Dadar’s role as a city node.

Geographically it sits on the island city portion of Mumbai within the Mumbai metropolitan area of Maharashtra, between the older south Mumbai districts and the northern suburbs. The neighbourhood is tightly built and contiguous with surrounding localities such as Prabhadevi and Parel.

  • Transport hub: Located in central Mumbai, it functions as a major interchange between the city's Western and Central suburban rail lines and several bus routes, making it one of the busiest commuter hubs in the metropolis.
  • Best time to visit: Early mornings are best for the flower market when traders are active and for quieter walks on the park before daytime traffic peaks.

What to See #

  • Shivaji Park: A large open public ground established as a civic space and one of the city's principal cricket and political meeting places, measuring several hectares and bounded by residential streets.
  • Dadar Railway Stations: Served by both the Western and Central line suburban rail networks plus a major bus terminus, with two adjacent railway stations serving different lines.
  • Dadar Flower Market: A wholesale flower market operating in the early morning that supplies florists across Mumbai and is concentrated near the railway and market streets.
