Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is a large protected area in northeastern Ecuador established to conserve Amazonian rainforest and flooded forest ecosystems. The reserve was created in 1979 and encompasses extensive river, lagoon and swamp habitats.
The landscape comprises seasonally flooded forests, oxbow lakes and winding waterways that are explored by canoe; wildlife commonly observed includes river dolphins, caimans, monkeys and hundreds of bird species. Lodges and guided tours operate from community settlements and regional gateways.
Designated a wildlife reserve in 1979, the area was set aside to protect its rich biodiversity and the livelihoods of indigenous and local communities who use the waterways and forest. Conservation and ecotourism have been central to management approaches in the reserve.
The reserve lies in Sucumbíos and neighboring provinces in northeastern Ecuador near the border with Colombia; the nearest regional urban center for visitor access is Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja).
- Size and habitat: The reserve covers roughly 603,380 hectares of Amazonian rainforest and seasonally flooded habitats, making it one of Ecuador's largest protected areas.
- River access: Most visitor access is by river canoe from community lodges and tour operators based in regional gateway towns such as Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja).
How to Get to Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve #
The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is in the Ecuadorian Amazon and is reached via gateway towns rather than by regular public transit. Most visitors travel to Lago Agrio (Nueva Loja) - reachable by air from Quito - and then join an organized lodge transfer that includes several hours by road and river boat into the reserve. Tours and lodge transfers are the standard way to access visitor areas; independent overland access is limited and roads can be rough.
Tips for Visiting Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve #
- Plan your trip through an authorized lodge or operator in Lago Agrio-Cuyabeno is only reliably visited as part of organized multi-day tours that provide boats, local guides and park permits.
- Build in travel buffers: most itineraries require an overnight or early-morning departure from Lago Agrio plus river transfers, so factor in delays and daylight for safe river travel.
- Book at least one guided night canoe trip: nocturnal river sorties are where guides regularly find caimans, owls and other nocturnal mammals that are rarely seen from daytime trails.
- Ask your lodge about recent water levels and route plans before you go; Cuyabeno's blackwater channels and flooded forest access vary seasonally and that affects which trails and canoe routes are used.
