Curia Julia
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman senate house preserved in the Forum
In the Roman Forum, the Curia Julia preserves the chamber where the Roman Senate met; visitors come to view restored brickwork, inscriptions and the forum’s concentration of ancient civic architecture.
The Curia Julia is the Roman Senate house located in the Roman Forum in central Rome, built to serve as the meeting place of the Senate from the late Republic and Imperial periods. Construction was begun under Julius Caesar and completed under Augustus in the late 1st century BCE.
The building replaced earlier senate houses on the site and was used for official senatorial business through the Imperial era; it later underwent alterations, damages by fire and partial conversion in the medieval period. The curia’s present appearance reflects archaeological excavations and restorations, notably 20th-century work that aimed to recover its Roman form.
The Curia Julia sits on the north-west side of the Forum near the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Via Sacra, integrated within the sequence of public buildings and temples that form Rome’s ancient civic centre.
- Forum location: located on the northwest side of the Roman Forum, the building is identifiable by its preserved brick façade and copper roof dating from modern restorations.
