Curia Hostilia
Ruins Ancient Roman senate house, early Republican political center
The Curia Hostilia once housed Rome’s republican senate within the Roman Forum; today its location and layered remains draw visitors studying the city’s political and architectural past.
The Curia Hostilia was the principal meeting house of the Roman Senate located in the Roman Forum during the early and middle Republic. It served as the political and judicial meeting space for Rome’s governing magistrates in the pre-imperial era.
Traditional accounts attribute the building’s foundation to the regal period and later Republican enlargement and repairs; it functioned as the Senate’s meeting place until it was replaced by later curiae. Over time it was rebuilt or superseded as Rome’s political architecture evolved, and its location lay adjacent to the Comitium and the forum’s central public spaces.
Archaeological and literary evidence links the Curia Hostilia with the civic heart of ancient Rome and with successive curial buildings that stood on roughly the same site. Its footprint and remains have been studied within the complex stratigraphy of the Roman Forum.
The Curia Hostilia was situated in the Roman Forum in central Rome, immediately next to the Comitium and the central civic assembly area of the city.
