Cserhát is a hilly mountain range in northern Hungary, forming part of the North Hungarian Mountains and noted for its forested slopes and traditional rural settlements. The range spans parts of Nógrád and Pest counties and is characterised by folded hills and limestone outcrops.
The area contains small villages, woodland trails and scattered castle ruins that attract walkers and cultural visitors. Popular activities include short hikes on marked paths, viewing traditional Palóc architecture and visiting roadside castles and manor houses.
Human settlement and fortification in the Cserhát dates to the medieval period, with many castles and hilltop fortifications constructed or expanded between the 13th and 16th centuries. Over time the landscape has remained largely rural, with forestry and small-scale agriculture alongside conservation of vernacular villages.
Geographically the Cserhát sits in north-central Hungary between the Ipoly and Zagyva river valleys, north of the capital region and forming a transition from the lowlands to the North Hungarian highlands.
- Hollókő: the 17th-century Palóc village of Hollókő, a UNESCO World Heritage site, lies on the southwestern edge of the hills and is a good base for exploring the area.
