Crescent Lake (Yueyaquan) is a small crescent-shaped oasis lake located near the Mingsha Sand Dunes just south of Dunhuang in Gansu province, China. It is a long-established desert oasis and a popular tourist site because of its unusual shape and setting among high dunes.
The site is compact and typically visited on day tours that include a walk on the dunes, short camel rides, and viewing the crescent-shaped pool framed by sand. Conservation and water-management efforts in recent decades have stabilized water levels and maintained the tourist facilities adjacent to the lake.
Historically the lake served caravans on the Silk Road as a water source; today it is part of the larger Dunhuang tourism circuit that includes the Mogao Caves and desert landscapes. The surrounding landscape is arid dune fields with a strong contrast between sand and the small green oasis.
Geographically the lake sits roughly 6 kilometres south of Dunhuang city in northwest Gansu, set within the Mingsha Shan dune system at the edge of the Gobi Desert.
