Cosigüina is a stratovolcano on the northwestern coast of Nicaragua in Chinandega Department that projects into the Gulf of Fonseca. Its steep slopes form a prominent coastal peninsula and it is a recognizable landmark from surrounding coastal communities.
The volcano produced a major explosive eruption in the 19th century that had regional impacts and is recorded in historical accounts. It is largely uninhabited on its slopes and is visited occasionally by hikers and researchers.
Geographically Cosigüina sits on the Gulf of Fonseca coast of Nicaragua, northwest of the departmental capital Chinandega, and is surrounded by low coastal plains and coastal fishing communities.
