The Cordillera de Talamanca is a mountain chain running across southern Costa Rica into western Panama, containing the country’s highest summits and extensive montane and cloud-forest ecosystems. It is a regional biodiversity hotspot and includes protected areas that straddle the international border.

The range produces steep elevational gradients and hosts high levels of endemism, with peaks that exceed 3,000 metres and puna- or páramo-like highland habitats at the highest elevations. Conservation areas within the range include large national parks and international transboundary reserves.

Geologically and ecologically, the Talamanca range forms the backbone of southern Costa Rica and western Panama, separating Caribbean and Pacific drainages and supporting indigenous territories and low-density rural settlements in surrounding valleys.

  • High peaks and biodiversity: The range contains several peaks above 3,000 metres and is a major center of endemic biodiversity in Central America.

What to See #

  • Cerro Chirripó: Cerro Chirripó, the highest peak in Costa Rica at about 3,820 metres, is the most prominent summit of the range.
  • La Amistad International Park: La Amistad International Park spans parts of the Cordillera de Talamanca and across the Costa Rica-Panama border, protecting extensive montane rainforest and cloud forest.

Travel is typically by car or bus to regional towns and then by local roads into mountain trailheads.

Tips for Visiting Cordillera de Talamanca #

  • If exploring the Talamancas, hire local guides-routes can be remote and weather changes rapidly.
  • Combine visits to lower cloudforest reserves with a trek into La Amistad International Park for the best sense of the range's biodiversity.
