The Coptic Museum in Cairo is a national museum dedicated to the history and art of Egypt’s Coptic Christian communities, founded in the early 20th century to gather and conserve Coptic artifacts. It houses collections spanning stone, wood, textile, metalwork and manuscripts relating to Coptic religious and daily life.

Exhibition galleries display carved funerary and ecclesiastical stonework, painted icons, delicate textiles and liturgical objects from Late Antiquity through the medieval period. The museum’s courtyard and gardens contain larger architectural fragments and provide a compact route through the collection.

The museum was created to assemble dispersed Coptic objects and built up holdings through donations, archaeological finds and transfers from church properties. It has acted as a center for study and preservation of Egypt’s Christian heritage since its foundation.

The museum is located in the Coptic Cairo district, close to historic churches such as the Hanging Church and other religious sites in Old Cairo. It sits within the dense historic quarter south of central Cairo’s modern museum and administrative buildings.

  • Founding purpose: Established in the early 20th century to preserve and display Coptic Christian heritage and art from across Egypt.
