Copán
Archaeological Site Ancient Maya archaeological site with ornate stone stelae
Copán’s archaeological park contains Classic Maya stelae, an intricately carved hieroglyphic stairway and a museum; visitors explore ruins, local craft markets and the town of Copán Ruinas.
Copán is a major Classic Maya archaeological site in western Honduras, renowned for its sculpted stelae, hieroglyphic inscriptions and complex stone architecture. The site rose to prominence during the Classic Maya period and is one of the most studied Maya centres outside the core regions in Guatemala and Mexico.
The ruined city contains large plazas, pyramids, a ballcourt, intricately carved stelae and the famous Hieroglyphic Stairway, which preserves an extensive hieroglyphic text. Visitors typically explore the open-air archaeological park and the onsite museum that displays many recovered sculptures and artefacts.
Copán was a dynastic capital governed by a sequence of rulers whose monuments record political events and lineage; construction and carving peaked between the 5th and 9th centuries CE. The site was later abandoned and rediscovered by archaeologists and explorers from the 19th century onward, with ongoing excavation and conservation since the 20th century.
The ruins lie in the valley of western Honduras near the town of Copán Ruinas, close to the border with Guatemala and El Salvador, set among agricultural land and hills and accessible by road from regional centres.
- Chronology: The site dates mainly to the Classic period (circa 5th-9th centuries CE) and is one of the most important archaeological centres of the southern Maya area.
- UNESCO status: Copán is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for finely carved stone sculpture, hieroglyphic inscriptions and well-preserved architectural groups.

How to Get to Copán #
The Copán archaeological zone is reached by road from Honduras’s main transport hubs; regular intercity buses and shuttles run from San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa to the town of Copán Ruinas (several hours by road).
From Copán Ruinas the main ruins and museum are a short taxi ride or a walk of typically under a few kilometres from the town centre; local taxis and walking routes connect the town with the archaeological park.
Tips for Visiting Copán #
- Arrive at Copán Ruinas early-opening time is the best window to see the main plaza, stelae and the Hieroglyphic Stairway before bus tours and day-trippers arrive from neighboring countries.
- Buy a combined ticket that includes the onsite museum and the ruins to avoid separate queues; the museum contains detailed stelae photos and context that enhance the site visit but is often overlooked.
- Stay overnight in Copán Ruinas so you can enter at opening time and again late afternoon-many day visitors pass through mid-day, so an overnight lets you enjoy the site with far fewer people.
